Can We Make the Grade? Our Stories

Student Squeeze:  The Alarming Impact

Navigating busy school hallways for a student with mobility challenges is amplified in the overcrowded hallways of our neighbourhood Edmonton School. For our student they become particularly anxious every time the bell rings.

As we consider the general overcrowding situation, let's also ensure we are considering the urgent need for inclusive solutions that will ensure every student, regardless of physical ability will thrive in our schools.

Breaking Point: Inside a Crowded Class

Our family has reached a breaking point, the sheer number of students in the classroom means we have resorted to checking boxes.

Present: check.

And that is it.

The teachers are doing their best, but in a classroom at capacity with a diversity of needs, the quality of education has eroded leaving no room for personal attention. This has created an environment of competition in the classroom, all students trying to get the attention of their teacher. For our child, we have seen increased frustration with school and overall a diminished enthusiasm for learning.

We are heartbroken.

Desparate Measures: A Student Speaks Out

High school is overwhelming. The biggest adjustment I have had to make is planning to go to the bathroom between 80 minute classes. Along with the other 2100 students.

Despite my best efforts to focus on academics, overcrowding makes it an uphill battle - as the population is so large the number of students who are sick and come to school sick has become a normal thing. Crowding has affected my ability to concentrate on the important things and also my physical well-being.

I have a story to share
